About bariatric revision

Bariatric revision (or weight loss surgery revision) surgery helps maximize weight loss results or correct issues of a previous procedure. We offer revision for procedures such as gastric bypass surgery, gastric band or sleeve gastrectomy. As a regional destination bariatric care system, our team is experienced in performing revisions and helping you achieve your weight loss and health goals.

How bariatric revision works

The right method of bariatric revision surgery will be based on:

  • Any issues you may have experienced
  • The type of bariatric procedure you received
  • Your unique medical history
  • Your weight loss results

You may choose to revise a previous bariatric procedure because you did not lose enough excess weight or you have regained weight. In some cases, issues or complications related to your procedure, such as acid reflux or food intolerance, may occur afterward.

Our team members will work with you to help determine the right surgical procedure for you. We'll also help you with the critical role of altering your diet, lifestyle and behaviors.

Risks and complications

Like all surgeries and procedures, there are some potential risks and complications to consider, such as blood clots, breathing issues, infection or leaks inside the intestinal tract.

Revising to a gastric bypass procedure has risks similar to any abdominal surgery. We pride ourselves on maintaining your safety and following the clinical guidelines set by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Cost of procedure

We’re more than happy to help you with finalizing your insurance coverage if bariatric surgery is a benefit offered by your insurer. We also offer the option to self-pay for services if you prefer.

After revision surgery

Your doctor will speak with you about what to expect after any surgery or procedure. Depending on your surgery, you can expect to stay in the hospital for two days to recover and resume normal activities three to five weeks after surgery. Resting and prioritizing your healing are key to having the best possible outcome after your procedure.

Each revision option will differ in terms of the weight loss you can expect. Your surgeon and the bariatric team will speak with you before surgery on what you can expect. Generally, weight loss after a revision procedure is usually less than your original bariatric procedure. To maximize weight loss after review, we recommend making sure your diet, lifestyle and behaviors change to help you reach and maintain your weight loss goals.
